Description: The Society of Actuaries has developed and released a health care forecast model to illustrate the potential impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on insurance plan health care costs in the United States. Users of the model may include insurance company actuaries seeking an additional reference point for 2021 cost development, regulatory actuaries seeking additional insights and validation of costs as part of rating submissions for 2021, and insurance purchasers seeking a deeper understanding of the forces driving 2021 health care costs and premiums. The model is not intended as a replacement for existing modeling tools developed by insurers or regulators. Rather, the model’s primary purpose is to illustrate the key outbreak-related forces that are affecting the trajectory of health care costs. In addition the model can provide a common reference point to facilitate dialogue with respect to the regulatory review of 2021 health insurance rate filings.

Description: Millions of aging Americans are challenged to prepare for uncertain health and financial setbacks in addition to cognitive impairment that impacts one-third of adults over age 85. Advanced planning can reduce the negative impact of impairment on personal finances, including financial exploitation, scams and fraud, and care and spending decisions that are not aligned with retirement goals. To address these issues, the SOA’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program co-sponsored work on the Thinking Ahead Roadmap which was created by a team from the University of Minnesota and Stanford Center on Longevity. As the world begins to emerge from COVID-19, what new technologies will next take root in the health care system and how will those affect medical costs? This session will review recent research from the SOA Health Section on how new technologies are spread and adopted. Particular focus will be given to emerging modes of consumer engagement and highly-focused gene and cell therapies that are breaking new ground in combating rare diseases. Description: Actuaries have the business acumen, problem-solving capabilities, and technical skills to develop innovative and data-driven solutions in the social insurance space. It is time we expand our scope and embrace an increased role in making a positive impact within the health care ecosystem. The primary focus of this paper is on social insurance programs dedicated to the most vulnerable population: low-income families accessing care through Medicaid. While there are numerous challenges that require other subject matter experts to take the lead, this article highlights topics where actuaries can be key players in developing and implementing tangible solutions to improve the care for the most vulnerable. Issues and solutions in this paper focus on the following three areas: 1. Access to appropriate care, 2. continuity of care, and 3. social determinants of health.

Description: In this webcast, presenters will outline the key content in ERM ASOPs 46, 47 and 55 and explore the impact each ASOP has on practitioners working in these fields. We will also describe the revision work currently under way in the ERM Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board.
